Everest scores Neil Young dates (as does Wilco and DCFC)

Exciting news for the fellas in Everest (featuring ex-members of … deep breath … Sebadoh, The Watson Twins, Folk Implosion, Dig, Earlimart, John Vanderslice), they’ve scored the opening slot on this winter’s Neil Young tour. I’ve been a fan of the band since discovering Great Northern’s Davey Latter was a member at one point and gave the band’s debut, Ghost Notes, 5 W’s (out of 5) in my review for Wonka Vision magazine (funny … I mention both Neil Young and Wilco in my review!). Death Cab for Cutie is on the bill for the first half of the tour, Wilco on the second half.

From Thrasher’s Wheat, a site dedicated to Neil Young news, here are the dates:

12 – Philadelphia, PA — Wachovia Spectrum / on sale September 19
15 – New York, NY — Madison Square Garden / on sale September 15

The concerts will feature the same band that he has toured Europe with: Ben Keith, Rick Rosas, Chad Cromwell, Anthony Crawford and Pegi Young.

Death Cab For Cutie and Everest will support dates from October 14 through November 5; Wilco and Everest are on the bill for dates starting November 29 through the tour’s conclusion, with the exception of the December 9 Chicago date which will feature (TBD) and Everest in support.

Probably one of the most interesting aspects of the announcement is that all shows for this tour will be general admission floor with reserved seating in the stands. This is great news for those of us who had to be restrained from standing and moving during “No Hidden Path”.

General admission tickets will be prices at $75.00 with reserved stand tickets ranging in price from $45.00 to $250.00.

’90s one-hit wonder videos

Got a CD in the mail by The Break and Repair Method. Quick research (read: a visit to the band’s MySpace page) reveals this is a side project of Matchbox 20 guitarist Paul Doucette (dude, give up your day gig and put all your eggs in this basket!) featuring a wide array of friends who lend their talents to various songs. Reading the names is like reading a Who’s Who of mid-90s MTV videos – Tracy Bonham (“Mother Mother”), Nina Gordon (ex-Veruca Salt, “Seether”), David Levita (Alanis Morrisette), Roger Manning (Jellyfish, Beck), Rusty Anderson (Paul McCartney), Jeff Russo (Tonic, “If You Could Only See the Way”), Ryan Macmillan (The Push Stars), and Matt Beck (Dog’s Eye View).

And, did I mention that Doucette is married to Moon Unit Zappa?

All these names got me thinking of the one-hit wonders of the ’90s, particularly the mid-90s (of which many of these performers were members of).

Remember this song?

Or this one?

Or this one?

I know fans of these bands will argue that they were more than one-hit wonders the same way I’ll argue that Blind Melon and Veruca Salt were more than one-hit wonders, but to the average music consumer, these bands are known for one hit, and one hit only.

You can’t embed YouTube videos in the comments section but can put in the URL if you want. Or, if you want to embed videos or see what other one-hit videos from the ’90s people remember, head over to this message board thread on Donewaiting.com.

Remember when Slash used to be cool?

Yeah, it’s been a while … a LONG while … since Slash was a true bad ass, but this one hurts, hurts a lot.

The former GN’R guitarist joined – ready for this? – FERGIE onstage this weekend for a “Sweet Child O’ Mine” cover.

(You’ve got to LOVE the commentary of the guy filming the song)

In other Slash news, rumors continue to swirl about who the next Velvet Revolver singer is going to be. Royston Langdon’s (ex-Spacehog, ex-Liv Tyler’s husband) name has popped up as has ex-Rose Tattoo frontman Angry Anderson. If anybody cares, an announcement is supposedly due soon.

Also, ex-GN’R guitarist Izzy Stradlin just released a new album (which Duff plays some bass on) called Concrete via iTunes. I’m going to download it tonight and will provide a review later this week.

Darker My Love

Got an advance copy of the new Darker My Love CD, 2, in the mail last week and the first thought I had was “Is this the new Dandy Warhols album?” Of course, I don’t know the Dandies THAT well so maybe this sounds nothing like them but when I checked my e-mail in-box I see a note saying Darker My Love is going to be touring with the Dandies this summer so I guess the comparison isn’t too far off. 2 is a stunning listen, even the first time through, full of fuzzy and shimmering guitars, the kind of which made people fall in love with the previously mentioned Dandy Warhols as well as artists like Spiritualized. I haven’t given it enough listens to hammer out a review right now, but one will be coming shortly.

In the meantime, here are a few goodies for you to nibble on.

A not-so-Taysty “Pork and Beans” cover

I found a bit of humor in Chocolate Rain, the breakthrough YouTube hit by Tay Zonday. And I don’t think Weezer’s video for “Pork and Beans” would have been complete without an appearance by Urkel’s deep-voiced cousin but I couldn’t even make it through this parody commercial for Weezer’s new album (in stores ToTay).
