Two songs you hate that I love

When I was in high school and got my first alarm clock/radio, I swear that every morning when the alarm would go out and 100.7 WMMS would start playing on the radio, I heard one of these two songs. I have a soft spot in my heart for them even though they probably both represent the worst of late ’80s FM schlock pop. The Giuffria song popped up on the iPod today when I hit shuffle and it reminded me of high school.

Giuffria – “Call to Your Heart”

Foreigner – “I Want to Know What Love Is”

New Breeders EP and video

Jonesing for new music by The Breeders? The Deal sisters have released a new digital EP (Fate to Fatal) today that you can purchase at iTunes, Amazon.com, or through the Breeders’ website. There is also a limited run of vinyl copies (1000) that feature silk-screened cover art.

There are four tracks on the EP including “The Last Time,” feature guest vocals by Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) and a cover of the Bob Marley and the Wailers song, “Chances Are”.

Here’s a video for the title track, “Fate to Fatal”.

True Live

David, Ross and I were hanging at the Australian BBQ during SXSW, drinking some free beer, eating some free food when this really cool music started playing on the house speakers – a fusion of hip-hop, soul music and jazz. I knew it was something that I’d want to check out later so I asked Glen from the Australian Music Collective  who it was we were listening to. He ran over to the soundboard, looked at the iPod that was serving as DJ and reported that it was True Live. He told me that True Live was a hip-hop band with classically-trained musicians who played all the music live rather than relying on samples to create the sound.

I don’t think the collective’s new CD, Found Lost, is available yet in the U.S. and to be honest I’m not sure it ever will be but if you dig what you hear, you should be able to track down the CD somehow even if it is just a digital copy through an outlet like iTunes of eMusic.
