The Twilight Sad single, video, tour dates

The video is a bit fleshy and there are perhaps some mildly NSFW moments in the video for The Twilight Sad’s new single, “I Became a Prostitue” from the Scottish band’s upcoming album, Forget the Night Ahead, due in stores sometime this fall. There are conflicting reports about the release date – though it’s looking like sometime late September or early October.

I was turned onto these guys a few years ago, just prior to attending SXSW where I had the opportunity to have my ear drums pounded by them … twice. Their 2007 release, Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters, was my third favorite release of that year and I described it as sounding like Snow Patrol “if Snow Patrol had started just a few years ago and was influenced by Mogwai, Aereogramme, My Bloody Valentine, and Dinosaur Jr.”

You can currently stream “I Became a Prostitute” and the b-side, “In the Blackout”, on the FatCat Records site.

Some U.S. tour dates (with Frightened Rabbit and We Were Promised Jetpacks) were released this week. If you don’t see a city near you, I’ve been informed that there are other Twilight Sad dates being worked on for October so stay tuned.

Tour: War Tapes

If you can land a song on a popular-among-the-teens TV show these days, you’ve got a leg up on the competition. With MTV no longer breaking rock bands, TV, movies, and commercials are the way to go. The L.A. retro-’90s band War Tapes were just featured on ABC Family’s Greek performing a couple of tracks at a frat party.

While there isn’t much here you haven’t heard before, War Tapes still manage to sound good at what they do and they are planning on capitalizing off their recent TV appearance – and promote their new album, The Continental Divide (buy on iTunes) – with a coast-to-coast tour.

Interview: Vulture Whale

Vulture Whale

I was hanging at the Alabamy (yeah, that’s what I call it) showcase at SXSW a few months ago when my Web penpal Duquette Johnston introduced me to former Verbena drummer Les Nuby. “Les is in Vulture Whale, they’re playing later,” Duquette told me though I had other plans (like seeing Dead Confederate next door).

Fortunately, a few weeks after SXSW ended, a copy of Vulture Whale’s self-titled sophomore release showed up in my mailbox and I agree with Blender magazine’s review that said “spin this thing when you’re sick and fucking tired of Kings of Leon and their arena-filling corporate rock” (okay, they didn’t really say that but they did namedrop KOL and the Drive-By Truckers as examples of Southern rock bands that Vulture Whales DOESN’T sound like!).

That tired-but-true description of “straight-up rock n’ roll” certainly applies to these fellas, I’m picturing it as the soundtrack to a drive home at 2:30am this summer after seeing a rock show in a sweaty club and drinking a few too many PBRs. You need something to fuel the ride home, something to sing along and air drum to while focusing clearly on the road ahead.

Drummer Jake Waitzman was kind enough to compile answers from his bandmates (Wes McDonald, Keelan Parrish, and Les Nuby) for the questions I sent last week. Hang on tight kiddies, this is a good one.

Tour: Torche / Harvey Milk

Torche – “She’s So Heavy / In Return”

Not sure if both bands are on all these dates since Torche hasn’t announced their summer tour plans yet but the little investigating I did point to strong evidence that the following dates will have both Torche and Harvey Milk on the bill. Hell, the only one I care about – Columbus, Ohio – has already confirmed the double bill.
