I spent the night with Everest … and they made a video

Sounds dirty, doesn’t it? Fortunately, the two aren’t related.

Last night’s plan was simple – slide into The Newport 5 minutes before Everest went on (8:45), watch their 45-minute set, and be back home before the 11pm news started. It didn’t quite work out that way.

After Everest’s amazing set (if you go into listening to their music knowing that singer Russell Pollard draws inspiration from Neil Young, Jeff Buckley, and Elliott Smith, you’ll be well prepared), I ran into guitarist Joel Graves at the merch booth. Being the liner note reading geek that I am, I recognized Joel’s name from Dig’s third – and final – album, Life Like. Joel told me that I’m the only person that has ever recognized him from his short lived time with the mid ’90s alterna-rockers.

Tour: Black Crowes

I guess it’s not that hard to believe that the Black Crowes Shake Your Money Maker came out 20 years ago. I remember listening to it my freshman year of college (and in the parking lot of Rob’s place in Wilmington, NC along with Dr.Morgan). To celebrate this anniversary, The Black Crowes are releasing a double album of acoustic material on August 3. Video: The Whigs – “Kill Me Carolyne”

Here’s “Kill Me Carolyne”, the first single/video from the Athens, Georgia trio The Whigs. The song can be found on the band’s second album, In the Dark, which was released earlier this year. These guys sound a lot like the stuff that was coming out of Columbus, Ohio in the early-to-mid ’90s mixed with the southern stylings of Kings of Leon and Drive-By Truckers.

Video: Kasey Anderson “I Was a Photograph”

Sitting here letting Kasey Anderson’s Nowhere Nights CD sink in so that I can properly summarize it in 100-150 words for the next issue of The Big Takeover. It’s a rather fantastic alt-country release, with reference points being Neil Young, Steve Earle, and Tom Petty. You’ll hear shades of all three in the track “I Was a Photograph”.

If you’re headed to SXSW, you’ll have a few opportunities to see Anderson as he kicks off his Nowhere Nights tour.
