Helmet lines up summer tour dates

Page Hamilton of HelmetJust like their former tourmates Guns N’ Roses, Helmet contains just one original member. And in both bands cases, that one original member is the most important one. Page Hamilton resurrected the Helmet name in 2004 after a 5-year vacation with essentially an all-new lineup (former Orange 9mm guitarist Chris Traynor was the only holdover). Size Matters, the 2004 release, did nothing to damage the good Helmet’s name in the post-hardcore world as the songs followed the chugga-chugga template that Helmet rode to a major label deal in the early ’90s. Monochrome followed in 2006 and the band made appearances at both the 2004 and 2005 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas (of which I caught both … the 2004 show being one of the highlights for me that year).

Helmet has announced a short run of summer dates with Burning Brides and Priestbird serving as support. These shows will take place in small venues, the likes of which Helmet hasn’t played in probably close to 20 years (Helmet did play some smaller clubs during a late 2004 tour but the venues for this tour seem to be even smaller, in the 200 – 300 person range).

  • Sat Aug 25 – Grumpy’s (w/ Melvins) – Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Mon Aug 27 – Ravari Room – Columbus, Ohio
  • Tue Aug 28 – Peabody’s – Cleveland, Ohio
  • Wed Aug 29 – Magic Stick – Detroit, Michigan
  • Thu Aug 30 – The Vogue – Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Fri Aug 31 – VNUK Lounge – Cudahy, Wisconsin
  • Sat Sep 1 – Double Door – Chicago, Illinois

Smashing Pumpkins tour dates

Billboard.com has revealed the first string of Smashing Pumpkins tour dates scheduled for this fall. The band will be touring to support their new release Zeitgeist which hits shelves next week. Calling the band Smashing Pumpkins is a little like Axl Rose calling his current band Guns N’ Roses – it’s a little bit misleading as only 2 of the original 4 Pumpkins are in the current lineup. In fact, the 2 that are in the Pumpkins now were also in Zwan which begs the question, why not call this band Zwan? Nostalgia, for sure, and after a quick, precursory listen to Zeitgeist, I guess it’s fair to call it a Smashing Pumpkins album as Corgan isn’t doing anything to damage the band’s good name. There are a few monster rockers on the new CD (which you can stream here) so we’ll see what becomes of this version of the Pumpkins. Of course, it would be great to see James Iha and D’arcy back in the band but that ain’t likely to happen anytime soon.

And now, the tour dates.

Jimmy Eat World announce summer tour dates

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Jimmy Eat World – nearly 3 years to be exact (Futures was released in October 2004). On a personal level, I’ve watched the band go from playing small basement clubs in front of a handful of people to headlining (and selling out) 1,200 seat clubs and opening arena tours for the likes of Weezer. Not too bad for the little emo band from Arizona.

JEW have finished recording their new album and now are in the mixing process which hopefully means a fall 2007 release. In the meantime, the band is hitting the road this summer to preview new material for fans. Most of the dates are at venues that are probably a little too small for the band to be playing at at this point in their career but since the new album isn’t out yet, maybe it makes sense to do a scaled back tour.

Good Charlotte to co-headline tour with Justin Timberlake

Okay, so I don’t really care about either of these artists but after the Rooney/Fergie tour announcement last week, I didn’t think I’d see a stranger double bill this summer. And then came the Good Charlotte/Justin Timberlake announcement. It just shows how much music barriers have broken down over the years. Yeah, Good Charlotte aren’t *real* punk rockers, but this is the equivalent of a Green Day/Michael Jackson tour 10 years ago in my opinion. Weird, weird, weird.

Huh? Did I hear you say you’re dying to hear Poison’s cover of JT’s “Sexyback”? Alright, here you go:

The return of The Rentals

Has it really been seven years since the last release from The Rentals? Seems so though head Rental Matt Sharp has released some solo material in the interim. While Sharp hinted last year that his band was working on new material, there was very little evidence to support the claim.

Now comes word from The Rentals camp that a brand new 4-song EP featuring the tracks “Last Romantic Day”, “Little Bit of You in Everything”, “Life Without a Brain” and a reworked version of “Sweetness and Tenderness” (from 1995’s Return of the Rentals) will be available on August 14. Not quite as good as a full length, but it will be nice to hear something new from the former Weezer guitarist.

Itching to get back on the road, The Rentals have lined up 2 months worth of tour dates starting in August. Copeland and Goldenboy will join The Rentals on all dates.

Just for fun, check out this interview I did with Sharp back in ’97 shortly after Seven More Minutes was released.

Here’s an old school video (circa 1995) for “Waiting” featuring one time Rental (and current SNL cast member) Maya Rudolph.
