Thenewno2 (George Harrison’s son) releases The Fear of Missing Out on Tuesday

Dhani Harrison will never be able to live down the comparisons to his father just as Sean and Julian were unable to ever be reviewed without the mention of John Lennon’s name. And, on the first release, “Make it Home”, from Thenewno2’s sophomore release, The Fear of Missing Out, Dhani does indeed sound like his father though the band’s music is more modern day Radiohead (with electronic and dubstep elements) than classic era Beatles.

The Fear of Missing Out will be released on July 31 and Thenewno2 will be performing at Lollapalooza next weekend.

Scott Lucas and The Married Men cover Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer”

Scott Lucas revealed after his band’s performance in Columbus on Sunday night that the cover they opened their set with – Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer” – will be featured on the Onion’s A.V. Undercover series sometime in the coming months.

And, shaking the setlist up a little bit, Scott Lucas and The Married Men decided to play the song for the first time live at this show. Fans of the original song (which became a hit after being featured in The Karate Kid) may not recognize this version of the song which is exactly what the band was going for. It was either Scott, or his drummer Randy Payne, who said that when they decided to cover the song, they said, “What would this song sound like if it had been written by Neil Young?” Judge for yourself whether or not they nailed it. (In my opinion, they absolutely did!)

Listen: Beat Connection – “The Palace Garden, 4am”

I saw the original Footloose movie in the ’80s. Letting kids dance is bad … BAD … it leads to fornication and the destruction of American values … or something like that. If that’s the case, then Beat Connection might as well be Satan.

There’s a lot to love in this track – the chirpy keyboards, the shakers, the Vampire Weekend-ish-like vocals (which, are sort of like Paul Simon-ish vocals), the shaky-shaky-shimmer-shimmer guitars. If you turned the (sort of) title track from The Palace Gardens into candy, you’d have a bag of Pop Rocks ready to jump around in your mouth.

Beat Connection will be on the road the rest of June and most of July.

Preteen Zenith features Polyphonic Spree’s Tim DeLaughter

Preteen Zenith is the new collaboration between Polyphonic Spree’s Tim DeLaughter and Secret Machines Philip Karnats and the duo is set to release Rubble Guts and BB Eye on May 29 via Good Records.

The Zenith doesn’t fall too far from the Spree although there are about 45 less band members in the new collaboration! If you’re into feel good, Flaming Lips-style quirky pop, you’ll want to give Rubble Guts and BB Eye a listen. If you’re not into this kind of stuff, you must hate life.
