Want to be Nelson’s personal assistant for the day? It’ll cost you.

I was hoping to see Scrap Metal this week – a sort-of supergroup featuring the Nelson bros, Eric Martin (Mr.Big), Mark Slaughter, and Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger) – but the show was canceled. Not sure if it was poor ticket sales, if it was Keagy’s involvement on the Night Ranger tour which kept him from playing this date, whatever, but I was a little bummed as I had been looking forward to hearing the greatest hits of each member’s respective bands with, undoubtedly, an all-star jam at the end. (Read the band’s official cancelation notice here).

Nelson did book a new show in Columbus on October 25 (with Eric Martin opening) at the Alrosa Villa which kind of makes up for the canceled Scrap Metal show. So as I was poking around on the Nelson site, I saw a link to something that said “Be a Personal Assistant”. Might be cool to hang with the brothers Nelson for the day, show them around town, take them out to dinner, whatever. Heck, maybe they’d even give you a couple of tickets to the show and a backstage pass or two for your trouble, right? Think again, chumps.

Nevermind cover star is all grown up

Every couple of years a story pops up about the kid who served as the cover model for Nirvana’s Nevermind album. NPR caught up with the now 17-year-old Spencer Elden to find out how his photo was chosen, the reaction his friends have when discovering it was him on the cover of Nevermind, and what he’s up to now.

This quote from the story is pretty funny:

“Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis,” he says from his home in Los Angeles. “So that’s kinda cool. I’m just a normal kid living it up and doing the best I can while I’m here.”

Remember when Slash used to be cool?

Yeah, it’s been a while … a LONG while … since Slash was a true bad ass, but this one hurts, hurts a lot.

The former GN’R guitarist joined – ready for this? – FERGIE onstage this weekend for a “Sweet Child O’ Mine” cover.

In other Slash news, rumors continue to swirl about who the next Velvet Revolver singer is going to be. Royston Langdon’s (ex-Spacehog, ex-Liv Tyler’s husband) name has popped up as has ex-Rose Tattoo frontman Angry Anderson. If anybody cares, an announcement is supposedly due soon.

Also, ex-GN’R guitarist Izzy Stradlin just released a new album (which Duff plays some bass on) called Concrete via iTunes. I’m going to download it tonight and will provide a review later this week.

RIP Natasha Shneider (Eleven)

Sad news, Natasha Shneider of the band Eleven has passed away from cancer. I caught Eleven opening for Pearl Jam on the Ten tour and really dug their sound. Natasha and her bandmate/husband Alain Johannes would later go on to work with Chris Cornell and Queens of the Stone Age, among others (most recently they lent their talents to the Gutter Twins album, Saturnalia).

Rival Schools returns

Me? I’m holding out for a Quicksand reunion which I’m pretty sure will never happen but I’ll take a Rival Schools reunion if it’s the best that I can get at this point in time. Walter Schreifels put elements of the band back together and just finished up a month’s worth of dates overseas. I think I read somewhere that Schreifels said a U.S. tour would happen this year and a new record was being worked on.

Here’s a clip of the band performing “Used for Glue” last week. And a cover of The Smiths “How Soon is Now” (which Schreifels used to cover with Quicksand back in the day).
