Tour: The Gutter Twins

Those of us headed to Austin in March for SXSW were hoping for an appearance by the Greg Dulli/Mark Lanegan project, The Gutter Twins. Unfortunately, it ain’t gonna happen. Instead, the duo will be playing shows in the Midwest that week and saving an Austin show until March 26. The Gutter Twins have posted two songs from their March 4 release, ‘Saturnalia’ (SubPop) on their MySpace page.

Live Ken Andrews CD now available

I’m of the mindset that Ken Andrews is one of the most overlooked artists of the last 20 years. Failure, the band he fronted in the ’90s, was always a favorite of the critics and of other bands, but that didn’t necessarily translate into big record sales. The band broke up in 1997 and since then Andrews has formed bands (ON, Year of the Rabbit), produced/recorded/mixed bands (Pete Yorn, Chris Cornell, A Perfect Circle) and written/recorded/toured as a solo artist with his wife, singer Charlotte Martin.

While on tour last year, Andrews recorded some of his performances and has culled songs from those performances for a release simply titled ‘ Live (Secrets of the Lost Satellite Tour, Spring 2007)’. The CD, featuring songs that span Andrews recorded career, is available in digital format through iTunes, Amazon, and Napster. If you crave an actual physical copy of the CD, you can pick one up through MusicToday or CD Baby.

Andrews is currently working on a project called Los Angeles Digital Noise (LADN) with his wife, Jordon Zardorozny (ex-Blinker the Star), Brad Laner (ex-Medicine), and Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon). Andrews says in an email newsletter that he’s hoping to finish the album in February so he can prepare for the birth of his child in April.

One additional Failure note: There is a tribute CD called ‘The Nurse Who Loved Me’ which is due to be released in mid-2008.

How do CDs leak before the release date?

Have you ever wondered how CDs which are supposed to be under lock and key somehow find their way onto P2P sharing services days, weeks, or sometimes even months before the official release date? The music industry has often blamed people working at the manufacturing plants or “thieves” who “find an unsecured copy of a CD sitting on somebody’s desk”, but, as Adrienne Day of New York magazine discovered, leaks often come from those who are closest to the music – people working at labels and journalists who are sent advance music in order to have time to listen before a deadline.

I had this discussion on the Blind Melon message board after demo tracks from the band’s forthcoming album found their way onto Oink, and then other download sites, back in October. I argued that the band – or at least somebody in the band – put those songs out there, especially given the fact that nobody even knew they were there until one of the band members mentioned in an interview that he had “heard” that the new album was on Oink. The band never publicly admitted putting anything out there, but considering that two of the guys run the studio where all the new material was recorded, and that the band has yet to sign with a label, it would be pretty odd if these demos ended up in the hands of somebody other than a band member who then through them up for people to download.

The Little Ones (ex-Sunday’s Best)

(an early photo of Sunday’s Best)

One of the first shows I ever booked (and there weren’t really all that many afterwards) was a triple bill of Sunday’s Best, Onelinedrawing, and Juno at some basement punk rock club called Bernie’s in Columbus, Ohio. Juno backed out at the last minute (to this day, I think their excuse for backing out was a load of crap) but the show went on with a local band taking Juno’s place. I think we did something like 80 paid which, for being a show in the summer (when a lot of students at OSU aren’t taking classes), turned out really nicely and the guys in Sunday’s Best were super appreciative of everything.

Tonight I was looking up the band Pond to see whatever became of them when I saw them somehow linked to a band called Skiploader. Skiploader’s lead singer, Tom Ackerman, went on to play drums with Sunday’s Best after his band broke up and it got me to wondering whatever happened to the Sunday’s Best guys. Turns out Ed Reyes and Ian Moreno of Sunday’s Best are now performing indie pop tunes (ala The Shins) as members of the much blogged/buzzed about band, The Little Ones who are just getting ready to hit the road with Nada Surf. Just amazing the stuff you can find out on the web with just a little searching.

MP3/Tour: Bob Mould

Bob MouldIt seems like a good time for Bob Mould to return, doesn’t it? I kind of feel like it’s been a long time since I gave the ex-Husker Du/Sugar front man any considerable amount of time in my CD player or on my iPod, but I’m feeling a bit nostalgic. The material I’ve heard from his new solo CD, ‘Direct Line’, in stores in early February sounds great, but in a strange way. Here’s a guy who undoubtedly has influenced a generation of singer/songwriters and his new material, while sounding distinctly Mould-ish, also sounds like material that some of the modern post-emo boys, the ones who have left the “rock” world behind to concentrate on being “serious solo artists”, might perform. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t get past the feeling that there is something kind of Dashboard Confessional-esque about Mould’s new material thus begging the question, was Chris Carrabba influenced by Mould or was Mould’s latest influenced by the generation of songwriters that HE influenced?

Want to hear what I’m talking about?
