Halloween isn’t the only time to see a Witch

Kevin and I were walking back to the hotel in Austin during SXSW 2004 when we passed a guy with long gray hair carrying a guitar that looked familiar. It was late, like 2 a.m. late, and my flight out of Austin was leaving about 5 hours late. Dazed and confused after 4 days of music, beer, BBQ, and very little sleep, I did a double take and said, “Holy shit. That was J Mascis!” Three hours later, in the Austin airport, I passed Mascis once again, this time he was sitting in a chair and was nose down (as in, he was asleep) in a Stephen King book.

Mascis has been excorcising his metal demons as the drummer in the band Witch. Now two CDs deep into their career – the most recent being March ’08’s Paralyzed – Witch is hitting the road for a week or so with Tee Pee Records labelmates Earthless.

Check out the stoner-metal goodness and get Mascis to sign the rare Dinosaur Jr. 7″ you bought off eBay at one of the following shows:

2/20 Toronto, CA The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern
2/21 Montreal, CA Les Saints
2/22 Providence, RI AS220
2/23 Boston, MA TT The Bears
2/24 Philadelphia, PA Johnny Brenda’s
2/25 Brooklyn, NY Music Hall Of Williamsburg
2/26 Washington, DC DC9
2/27 Asbury Park, NJ Asbury Lanes
2/28 Baltimore, MD Ottobar

Check out the opening act: Titus Andronicus

Los Campesinos put out a couple of great CDs in 2008 – CDs that had I spent more time with, would surely have garnered consideration for my “Favorites of 2008” list. It’s always my luck to discover a band just 48 hours after their touring vehicle has pulled out of Columbus, but I was pleased to learn that I hadn’t missed the Los Campesinos date and even had a couple more weeks to familiarize myself with their stuff.  With this extra time, I’ve also had the chance to check out Titus Andronicus, the opening band on the tour and while I know they made a lot of year-end lists, my first exposure to them came after the clock struck midnight in the new year.

These guys have pulled one over on me just like The Black Lips did at SXSW in 2007 when I was thoroughly convinced they were a British punk rock band. Jersey? Titus Andronicus is from Jersey, home of The Boss and … there must be something else from Jersey that I could reference but nothing springs to mind? Check out this song and tell me they don’t sound like an Irish punk band, the type where the lead singer is missing a front tooth or two due to a drunken barroom brawl.

Don’t change that song, it’s my favorite record

For most bands whose CDs I have in my collection, there seems to be a pinnacle album – one that I’ll listen to more than anything else in that band’s catalog. One that I don’t think they’ll ever do better than even though they may come close. Case in point – Superchunk’s Foolish. Now, part of this may be due to the fact that that was the first Superchunk CD I heard and I’m sure many would disagree and say they’ve made better. That’s fine. But ask me my favorite Superchunk album and, without any hesitation, I’ll say Foolish.

So, it’s really cool when bands decide to do a nostalgia tour and play one of their albums, start to finish, especially when it’s a band I like doing my favorite album of theirs. Jimmy Eat World just announced that they are doing a 10-date tour in which they’ll play Clarity in it’s entirety. Released in 1999, Clarity was considered by many fans to be Jimmy Eat World’s OK Computer – a shift and expansion in sound from their previous release (the also outstanding) Static Prevails. I remember talking to Robby from Crumb around that time and he was telling me how he had heard Clarity demos (this was the early days of the web and a few years before file-sharing) but that they were a fourth generation cassette copy (ha ha … CASSETTE). Clarity didn’t disappoint and to many JEW fans, myself included, this is the one album from the band’s catalog that, if picked to save one from a burning house, there wouldn’t be any hesitation.

Here are the dates. Tickets go on sale this Thursday (Nov.13):

Feb. 23: New York (Terminal 5)
Feb. 24: Washington, D.C. (9:30 Club)
Feb. 25: Philadelphia (Trocadero)
Feb. 26: Boston (House of Blues)
Feb. 28: Chicago (Metro)
March 2: Denver (Ogden Theatre)
March 4: San Francisco (Fillmore)
March 6: San Diego (House of Blues)
March 7: Tempe, Ariz. (Marquee Theatre)

Videos from Clarity after the jump.

Letters to Cleo to reunite … but don’t get too excited

Kay Hanley and Stacy Jones have been touring as part of Hannah Montana’s band and Hanley is married to LTC guitarist Michael Eisenstein so a reunion isn’t a huge surprise – they just had to rope in guitarist Greg McKenna and, well, let’s face it, his post-LTC career hasn’t exactly skyrocketed with Murder Capital of the World. Bassist Scott Riebling isn’t taking part in the 20th anniversary reunion and his spot will be filled by Joe Klompus (a member of Hanley’s solo band).

While it’s cool and all that LTC is reuniting (read the press release here … warning, it’s a Word doc), the “tour” is only 4 dates at this point (see below) and there is no indication of future shows or future new music. Until more dates get added or the promise of a new album surfaces, I’ll just have to be content with my LTC CDs and videos (thank you YouTube).

Dates:
November 8 -Los Angeles CA – The Roxy
December 8 – Boston MA – Paradise Rock Club
December 9 – Boston MA – Paradise Rock Club
* New York date in December to be added soon.
