Tour: Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound

Tee Pee Records is hands down my favorite label of 2009 with a number of droney/stonergaze rock releases. Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound is one of the standouts on the label – influences ranging from Spiritualized to the Byrds to Pink Floyd – and the band is teaming up the like-minded (non-Tee Pee) band Sleepy Sun for a 3-week run across the U.S.

The Twilight Sad single, video, tour dates

The video is a bit fleshy and there are perhaps some mildly NSFW moments in the video for The Twilight Sad’s new single, “I Became a Prostitue” from the Scottish band’s upcoming album, Forget the Night Ahead, due in stores sometime this fall. There are conflicting reports about the release date – though it’s looking like sometime late September or early October.

I was turned onto these guys a few years ago, just prior to attending SXSW where I had the opportunity to have my ear drums pounded by them … twice. Their 2007 release, Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters, was my third favorite release of that year and I described it as sounding like Snow Patrol “if Snow Patrol had started just a few years ago and was influenced by Mogwai, Aereogramme, My Bloody Valentine, and Dinosaur Jr.”

You can currently stream “I Became a Prostitute” and the b-side, “In the Blackout”, on the FatCat Records site.

Some U.S. tour dates (with Frightened Rabbit and We Were Promised Jetpacks) were released this week. If you don’t see a city near you, I’ve been informed that there are other Twilight Sad dates being worked on for October so stay tuned.

Tour: Alice in Chains

The new Alice in Chains single sounds pretty good, better than I had expected though, I suppose, if it was up to me and I was Jerry Cantrell, I would have taken over lead vocals and not brought in a new guy.

Tour: Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups at SXSW 2009

I was just thinking how it seemed like the promotional push for the newest Silversun Pickups CD, Swoon, wasn’t nearly as strong as it was for Carnavas. Maybe the band decided it would be better to put the CD out, let it sink in with listeners, and then hit the road.

SSPU is hitting the road for all of August with Manchester Orchestra and Cage the Elephant.

Tour: War Tapes

If you can land a song on a popular-among-the-teens TV show these days, you’ve got a leg up on the competition. With MTV no longer breaking rock bands, TV, movies, and commercials are the way to go. The L.A. retro-’90s band War Tapes were just featured on ABC Family’s Greek performing a couple of tracks at a frat party.

While there isn’t much here you haven’t heard before, War Tapes still manage to sound good at what they do and they are planning on capitalizing off their recent TV appearance – and promote their new album, The Continental Divide (buy on iTunes) – with a coast-to-coast tour.
