Reunited and it feels so good: Stabbing Westward

It’s been one of those weeks. Yesterday, I was thinking quite a bit about my grandparents (they both passed away a few years ago) and when I hit a site where I had to type in a randomly generated code, the code I had to enter was “Sadness Carroll” (my grandparents last name is Carroll). Earlier this week I dug out Stabbing Westward’s Wither Blister Burn + Peel for a listen and was even planning a “Where Are They Now?” post about the band. Then, today, I read that singer Christopher Hall and keyboardist Walter Flakus have gotten back together and are planning a fall tour. I can’t imagine bassist Jim Seller will take part as he runs a successful Whole Foods-type market in San Francisco called, fittingly, Sellers Market.

Here’s hoping that the tour includes some Ohio dates!

Failure’s “Fantastic Planet” to be re-issued on vinyl

Ken Andrews fans are FANATICS. While he’s never sold a million records in any of the bands he’s been in (Failure, ON, Year of the Rabbit) there is little doubt that he’s influenced a ton of musicians. Perhaps the greatest record Andrews has ever recorded, Failure’s 1996 Fantastic Planet, is getting the reissue treatment … on vinyl. You should be able to find the album in stores next Tuesday.

Here’s a mini-documentary about the album.

RIP – Ronnie James Dio \M/

From RonnieJamesDio.com

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.

– Wendy Dio

I was fortunate enough to meet Ronnie once. It was one of those week where there were back-to-back great shows – the Lynch Mob at the Newport Music Hall one night and Black Sabbath at Vets Memorial the next. The day of the Lynch Mob show, it was announced on the radio that the Sabbath show was being moved to the Newport … a “special, intimate show with the legends of metal” which translated to “Sabbath didn’t sell enough tickets to even come close to filling Vets”.

I was supposed to interview Lynch Mob’s drummer Mick Brown after the show so I was hanging out close to the left side of the stage where I was to meet the tour manager. During the show, I glanced over and saw Ronnie James Dio hanging out and watching Lynch Mob. He was in a secure spot and unless you were standing right next to the spot where Dio was standing, you wouldn’t have even seen him. I did and quickly asked the security guard if I could get my picture taken with Ronnie. He went over and asked and Dio motioned me over with a smile.

Hot off the presses, Roger Waters has announced tour dates for his performance of Pink Floyd’s classic, The Wall. It’s been 20 years since Waters last performed this opus in it’s entirety and I suspect for all the nostalgia seekers like myself, this is a “must see”.
