How do CDs leak before the release date?

Have you ever wondered how CDs which are supposed to be under lock and key somehow find their way onto P2P sharing services days, weeks, or sometimes even months before the official release date? The music industry has often blamed people working at the manufacturing plants or “thieves” who “find an unsecured copy of a CD sitting on somebody’s desk”, but, as Adrienne Day of New York magazine discovered, leaks often come from those who are closest to the music – people working at labels and journalists who are sent advance music in order to have time to listen before a deadline.

I had this discussion on the Blind Melon message board after demo tracks from the band’s forthcoming album found their way onto Oink, and then other download sites, back in October. I argued that the band – or at least somebody in the band – put those songs out there, especially given the fact that nobody even knew they were there until one of the band members mentioned in an interview that he had “heard” that the new album was on Oink. The band never publicly admitted putting anything out there, but considering that two of the guys run the studio where all the new material was recorded, and that the band has yet to sign with a label, it would be pretty odd if these demos ended up in the hands of somebody other than a band member who then through them up for people to download.

The Little Ones (ex-Sunday’s Best)

(an early photo of Sunday’s Best)

One of the first shows I ever booked (and there weren’t really all that many afterwards) was a triple bill of Sunday’s Best, Onelinedrawing, and Juno at some basement punk rock club called Bernie’s in Columbus, Ohio. Juno backed out at the last minute (to this day, I think their excuse for backing out was a load of crap) but the show went on with a local band taking Juno’s place. I think we did something like 80 paid which, for being a show in the summer (when a lot of students at OSU aren’t taking classes), turned out really nicely and the guys in Sunday’s Best were super appreciative of everything.

Sunday’s Best – “Don’t Let it Fade”

Tonight I was looking up the band Pond to see whatever became of them when I saw them somehow linked to a band called Skiploader. Skiploader’s lead singer, Tom Ackerman, went on to play drums with Sunday’s Best after his band broke up and it got me to wondering whatever happened to the Sunday’s Best guys. Turns out Ed Reyes and Ian Moreno of Sunday’s Best are now performing indie pop tunes (ala The Shins) as members of the much blogged/buzzed about band, The Little Ones who are just getting ready to hit the road with Nada Surf. Just amazing the stuff you can find out on the web with just a little searching.

New from The Damnwells

After wrapping up a tour earlier this year with Ari Hest, The Damnwells have been uncharacteristically quiet. I’m feeling a bit like a nervous nellie and letting thoughts of a band breakup enter my head even though there hasn’t been any real word from the band’s camp, only a cryptic MySpace blog (dated Sept.9) by lead singer Alex Dezen that said, “The band isn’t breaking up, but we’re going through real profound changes—changes that are permanent and pervasive.  This is something anyone who cares should know.  The Damnwells aren’t Wal-Mart, were not trying to sell you something you don’t want.  We are a band in the truest sense of the word, and we are struggling to stay alive.  There is nothing you can do about it.  This is something all unions face at some point in their innate, tenuous existence.”

Just this week, Alex started posting homemade videos on YouTube. I take it as a good sign that these videos are listed as “The Damnwells” rather than “Alex Dezen of The Damnwells” because it gives me hope that maybe Alex just needed some time off from writing, recording and touring but is now ready to jump back into it.

Here are the 3 videos that have been posted so far, the first featuring Alex’s relatively new bride, Angela, on backing vocals.

Tour: Radiohead

When you work a day job and can only post after the kids are in bed, you miss out on being the first site to post the news that Radiohead has announced a U.S. tour and have released a list of the cities they’ll be hitting to support ‘In Rainbows’. But, if somehow the news managed to escape you until now, here are the fuzzy details: there will be two legs of the U.S. tour, the first starting before Radiohead kicks off a European tour on June 6, the second starting after the European tour comes to an end, sometime after July 8. No other info (venues, dates, etc.) has been released other than the list of cities.

My boyfriend and I play Guitar Hero III together on our Wii. I play bass and he plays guitar, both on ‘Hard’ level.

He got frustrated and quit the band.

I’m looking for a replacement. I must admit it will be extremely difficult finding someone with the same skills, he was frickin’ awesome.

Me: a Muppet.
You: must be ok with playing in a band with a Muppet. A muppet who is prone to throwing tantrums.

Maybe she should give Conrad a call (link credit: SuburbanBliss.net).
