Another one bites the dust: So long New Frontiers …

… I barely knew ya!

This is sad news since I had pegged The New Frontiers to fill in for The Damnwells as that band seems to be on a permanent hiatus (though an Alex Dezen album of some sort is supposedly in the mixing phase right now). Both bands have a rural rock sound without coming across as too alt.country, though I wouldn’t mind if either band indulged a bit in the twang!

This song (“Mirrors”) reminds me a lot of my friends in Bel Auburn (who seem to be missing from the scene as well … please don’t say THEY’VE broken up too).

Another great one (“Walking on Stones”).

And the one that’s going to end up on my “Favorite Tracks of 2008” mix (“Black Lungs”).

Here’s the official word from the band:

It’s never fun to tell people news they don’t want to hear so I’ll get right to it: The New Frontiers are quitting. It’s been a priceless experience, writing music together and sharing it with all of you in our travels across America, but the time has come for us to move on to other things. There are so many people out there that we couldn’t possibly thank you all for the support you’ve given us through the years. Giving us a place to stay on tours, making care packages for us, coming out to shows, buying records, feeding us, the list really does go on and on… We could not have done it for as long as we did without you. We’ll be playing a couple final shows here on the home front in Dallas and we would love to see any and all of you who can make it out. Thanks for taking part in the life of our band. We will miss you all…

Love,

The New Frontiers

Letters to Cleo to reunite … but don’t get too excited

Kay Hanley and Stacy Jones have been touring as part of Hannah Montana’s band and Hanley is married to LTC guitarist Michael Eisenstein so a reunion isn’t a huge surprise – they just had to rope in guitarist Greg McKenna and, well, let’s face it, his post-LTC career hasn’t exactly skyrocketed with Murder Capital of the World. Bassist Scott Riebling isn’t taking part in the 20th anniversary reunion and his spot will be filled by Joe Klompus (a member of Hanley’s solo band).

While it’s cool and all that LTC is reuniting (read the press release here … warning, it’s a Word doc), the “tour” is only 4 dates at this point (see below) and there is no indication of future shows or future new music. Until more dates get added or the promise of a new album surfaces, I’ll just have to be content with my LTC CDs and videos (thank you YouTube).

Dates:
November 8 -Los Angeles CA – The Roxy
December 8 – Boston MA – Paradise Rock Club
December 9 – Boston MA – Paradise Rock Club
* New York date in December to be added soon.

Back for more

You probably have already forgotten about Hurricane Ike. Who would have guessed that the storm that hit Texas would make it’s way all the way to Ohio and knock out power at Atomic Ned headquarters for 6 days? The server that hosts AtomicNed.com was also hit with a power outage and then the owner of the server (my father-in-law) was on vacation for a week so I apologize for the downtime. But, as Ratt once said, “We’re back / back for more” so hang out tight.

Desalvo video – “Oedipus Rising”

I’m not the biggest fan of noise rock but years ago Allan Stewart (Idlewild) and Alex Grant told me about a side project they were involved with called Desalvo and Allan gave me a 3-song demo that was filled with blast furnace, face melting NOISE. That being said, I LOVE the demo I was given – partly because Allan and Alex are good guys and partly because I had a reason to like the demos (they reminded me a bit of Knut, a band that I was introduced to by Aereogramme

Desalvo was featured on a Rock Action sampler this summer and will be releasing their debut album – Mood Poisoner – in September (not sure whether it will be available in the U.S. but I’m keeping my fingers crossed).

Check out a video for “Oedipus Rising” (warning: not for the weak of heart)

Here’s the tracklisting for Mood Poisoner according to Desalvo’s MySpace page:

BROWN FLAG
TONGUESCRAPER 1 & 2
RIPPER SITUATION
LATRINE LIZARD
GET BLACK
OEDIPUS RISING
SCHINDLER’S LIFT
QUESTIONABLE SPORT
SPANDOFLAGE
COCK SWASTIKA

Airbourne drops off Motorhead tour

The bill seemed to good to be true – Motorhead, The Misfits, Airbourne, Valient Thorr, and Year Long Disaster – and a recent announcement from Airbourne via their MySpace page backs that thought up.

“After 200+ shows this year, Joel’s suffering from strained vocal chords and is being forced under doctor’s orders to cancel the current USA dates with Motorhead. All that is needed is a couple of weeks rest & then the band will be back on the Road in Japan this Oct and then taking on a UK / Europe tour for the third time in ten months. The band is gutted that they can not play these shows with Motorhead & hope to see you all at a show soon.”

This blows as that was the primary reason I was going to the show in Columbus next Sunday night. What this means, Bryan (if you’re reading this), is that my plus one is probably now available for you to use since the person going with me was only going to see Airbourne.

Here are the remaining dates on the Motorhead tour, sans Airbourne.
