Ready for round two to support Under the Blacklight, Rilo Kiley are hitting the road next month. This is where I reminisce about seeing the band in their early days play a really small punk rock club in front of about 20 other people. It was apparent, even back then, that Jenny Lewis had all the makings of being an indie rock superstar.

So, I’m trying to put the thought of missing SXSW out of my head cuz it’s only leading to a sour stomach. I think the thing I regret missing the most is Evan Dando and whoever else makes up the Lemonheads these days perform It’s a Shame About Ray in it’s entirety last night. I haven’t found too many reviews of the show though this one on NME.com says Emo’s Annex, which is essentially a parking lot with a tent thrown over the stage, was packed to capacity and those who couldn’t get in were standing outside the chainlink fence watching/listening as best they could.
This album brings up so many memories of my college days, particularly drinking $1 Mooseheads at this corner bar called Bub’s on the Ohio State campus while pumping dollars worth of quarters into the jukebox to listen to this CD that all of us already owned.
I found one Lemonheads SXSW clip on YouTube (I’m sure more will pop up later) but rather than post that one, here’s the Lemonheads doing “Rudderless” in 2005 at a club in Rhode Island.
Read the story I wrote about The Hives for the March issue of MELT after the jump.
EDIT: CHANGE IN PLANS – After a pretty tough weekend trying to get home from Vegas, I’ve lost the enthusiasm for attending SXSW this year and have canceled my plans. But, Donewaiting.com will still be on hand covering all the great events so make sure to check out the site on a regular basis over the next couple of days.
Anybody else? I’ll be posting daily updates over on Donewaiting.com and will probably duplicate a lot of that over here. If I have time before heading south, I’ll post a list of bands I’m trying to see (I would do it now but I’m stuck in the Vegas airport).
Noted blues guitarist Jeff Healey, who I’ll admit I know mainly because of his appearance in the Patrick Swayze movie Roadhouse, has passed away at the age of 41 after a bout with cancer. Apparently he’s been battling cancer pretty much since the time he was born as it took his eyesight at the age of one.
RIP Jeff Healey.
Here he is playing his “hit”, “Angel Eyes” in August of 2007.
